I have to admit....I was not a fan of using a roster spot for a kickoff specialist, but as long as he can kick the shit out of it like he has been....it's a serious equalizer for the Devin Hesters of the league. The cost/benefit of having a guy like that on board far outweighs the cost benefit of trying to improve our special teams play against a guy like that. I say keep Lloyd long-term, as long as he can keep kicking it long, along with Kasay.

not so much here, but it's kinda funny reading how people are upset that we're trying to keep Kasay for that much longer, like he hasn't been good enough. Or like the next kicker will automatically be here for 15 years and be better.

Pretty sure we're actually doing OK capwise right now.

it's been an adjustment. I think Lloyd physically adds a lot, plus adds to that mentality of the team. Not unlike how a 350 lb rookie RT may or may not dominate his assignment every down, but the dedication to that thought process leads that mentality. We're going to do this, and you won't stop it.

Not that I want to replace Kasay, but does this mean Rhys can't kick field goals?

I think it's a pretty transparent move, reading into it isn't really what was intended. I'm sure they're more than fine with what they have now out of each.
I don't think it means anything about Lloyd for FG kicking. We haven't seen him do it, but I'm sure he can. I'd like to get him some experience there, but the end result is that Kasay is lights out at one, Lloyd is lights out at another, and we're fine with that balance it seems.

There are people on the charlotte.com blog cursing Hurney for this and worried about who the roster spot is going to come from "for the next four years." A few agree that this will be a fine move as long as Lloyd becomes our punter.

looks like a move to guarantee that Kasay retires as a Panther.

3 blocked punts isn't enough for those people? They want more?

edit: I like the move and I like having two kickers if necessary. Obviously the roster spot is valuable, but with an older kicker like Kasay (who has had some injury problems in the last few years) it's nice to have some insurance. It was pretty sad watching the Jets have to go for it on 4th down and go for 2 because their kicker couldn't kick the ball. With Lloyd back there we do have some backup (although I believe he's a right footed kicker which would disrupt the holder.)

Definitely like the fact that Kasay will retire here, that's important.

I'm sure Kasay's role as a defacto chaplain/pastoral counselor for the team figured into the team's desire to sign that contract.
