Scorsese you may have an argument for. The Coen brothers need a couple more classics, at least, to be in the running. And Spielberg is a sappy, Hollywood shill, but that is just my opinion (I am being intentionally harsh, he has made some classics).

I would too along with FF Coppola. And i could add a couple more to the list too.

Other than the obvious John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock and John Hustons, these are my personal favorites, which stand out massively in my DVD collection.

    Ridley Scott
    Jim Sheridan
    Alan Parker
    Ron Howard
    Wolfgang Peterson
    Clint Eastwood
    Mel Gibson
    Tarantino
    Guy Richie
    Brain DePalma
    James Cameron
    Richard Attenborough

I guess you can tell from those guys what type of movies i like.
Some have made alot more movies than others but i can usually count on enjoying their movies and i actually own most of them too.

Ridley Scott has made some classics. The first Alien is still the greatest horror film of all time, with The Shining a close second. The most recent, re-edited, no voiceover, remastered, director's cut of Blade Runner puts that movie easily in the top 10 or 15 of all time, IMO. Rent that newest version if you haven't seen it yet.

    I'm lost...
    The Shining blew absolute ass.

In it's defense, I read the book first. But still.... It sucked ass.

*edit to clarify... The book was awesome.... The movie sucked.

I guess this is where opinions can differ so much. Obviously the "traditional" top 10 have been in the game longer and it was probably alot easier to get recognised as an inovator as the industry was relatively young. Alot of the "newer" directors are obviously still relatively young. So how do modern classics get rated next to the great classics of old.

Plus, the young directors coming up today are gonna be more heavily influenced by the Spielbergs and Tarantinos because that is what they grew up on, rather then and generation like a James Whale or De Mille. Take someone like Paul Thomas Anderson, not a large portfolio but very solid work indeed.

I thought i was the only one that felt that way. I avoided mentioning it in reguards to Kubrick because it usually goes down like a lead balloon.

Yeah, good points. Do we decide technical merits or subjective feelings? Thrills or storyline?

    Agree
