    DeMarcus Ware
    Shawne Merriman

    Players they could have had.

I probably didn't need to include Brown since they already have Gore, but that would have been better then forcing yourself to pick a QB.

There was a debate about Aaron Rogers vs. Alex Smith. Everyone jumped on Smith's bandwagon, partially because Rogers is a Tedford guy and his delivery was a little strange. It wasn't until a few weeks before the draft that Smith won the argument. That draft seems a little weak looking back on it. Some major busts.

San Fran also hurt themselves by drafting Vernon Davis with the 6th overall pick or whatever ridiculous number that was. A rebuilding team tends to have greater holes to fill than TE. just my 2cents

    "Leadership abilities"

The idea was to give Smith a weapon on offense.

Davis can be a weapon when they have a qualified offensive coordinator.

    From 2005:
"Ignore all the comments on how smart Alex Smith is or how much character he has. While team officials spoke glowingly about Smith's pre-draft workout with the 49ers, the only comments you should pay attention to are those from Brandon Lloyd and Arnaz Battle when they expressed surprise at how weak his arm was. That shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone, since it's apparent from film review that Smith couldn't throw a ball through wet tissue paper. Moreover, he didn't grade highly on accuracy either. Being an athletic genius will only get you so far at quarterback if you can't throw, so Smith's fantasy prospects are limited even though he's likely to start from day one."
