Why was our trade SO much more expensive than Atlantas?

We give up next year's 1st, this year's second, and this year's fourth for the 19 pick.

Atlanta gave up two second round pics (one really high admittedly) and a fourth and got the 21 pick, plus a third and a fifth.

Granted, we were likely competing against Atlanta to get Otah, but it really seems like a large difference for two spots. I hope this doesn't come back to screw us, a lot has been hinged on Otah. Ironically we gave up a ton more to get Otah at 19 than we did to get Stewart at 13.

I think it's the competition part. I think we were both trying to trade with Philly to get Otah - and we had to pay up to get him. Atlanta wouldn't.

    but - we'll never know and it's done....so here's hoping he's outstanding.

We overbid because of zeal, but we also traded up a lot farther than ATL did. That's the biggest part, we traded from the middle of the round to the middle of a much more valuable round, as opposed to the top of a round to a spot a few higher.

Yeah when I was looking through the numbers I saw that ATL's first second rounder was 34, which especially in this draft with 31 first round pics, was nearly first round. Should we have a solid year next year, it's conceivable our first rounder will be in the 20's. Let's hope so, would make the trade much more equitable.

The part that bothered me was the third and fifth ATL got. Is it significant or is it camp fodder? Probably depends on the roster I suppose, although a 3rd is never insignificant (but often wasted.)

The trade is gonna either look like a stroke of genius, or the biggest blunder in the 2008 draft.

Lets hope its the former, with him being a beast.

Yeah we also get a much better player. I imagine Atlanta was trying to move up there as well. We did get raped but if we gave up a slightly smaller package for Baker we'd all lose our minds.

Yeah, that's fair. I've definitely heard Otah's name bandied about, we at least got what most people think of as a talent. I don't imagine ATL got that, although as we all know, you never know.

I think we hyped Atlanta into feeling like they had to take Ryan at #3 or lose out, they paid us back by inflating the price for Otah.

How could we have done that? By threatening to take Ryan at 13? He was never going to fall that far anyway.

yeah, Otah was a top 20 and I didn't have Baker in the top 60. I would've been unhappy with Baker at 43.

Still too much in trade, but it could've been a lot worse. Also, think about the fun of having to give up a future 1, 2, and more to get Matt Ryan.
