Around here, euonymous are good for shrubbery. It's fast growing and can tolerate either full sun or mostly shade. It comes in green and variegated varieties. There's even a golden. Stay away from boxwoods. They can't tolerate the drought conditions we have during the summers too well. Azaleas are good. Rhododendrons too, but they need almost complete shade from the summer sun. Burford Holly is a good plant for full sun. Camellias and gardenias are good for shady areas. Camellias have red, white, or pink flowers in the winter. Gardenias are mostly white and sometimes yellow.

Flowers, petunias, salvia, impatiens (full shade), almost all daisies, daylilies, Asiatic and Oriental lilies are good choices. I've planted Black eyed Susan perennials and night salvia in my flower beds. The seeds are just beginning to sprout, but they should come back year after year if you mulch them well in the fall.

If you go to Lowes or Home depot, they'll have plants that do well in your area. Stay away from Hibiscus plants, they're semi-tropical and won't survive our winters, usually. They definitely won't survive a heavy snowfall or ice.

I love Hibicus. I had one and you are right it died. But in CA they don't die and he's in CA.
I am planting tons of seeds this year and hopefully will have lots of flowers, got sick of putting out the bucks on plants although I did put in some pansies for color right now.

it's completely bare, no landscaping. got grass planted in front last fall but that is all. i'd like to know what kind of bushes/shrubs everyone likes. we don't have the drought problem you guys have. I need something on the tall side at my entrance. that's what my grandma said cause my front porch is high.

Go get a tea olive. They'll get about 20' tall and 4' wide. They put out really small white flowers in the summer that smell like peaches. You can prune them to keep them smaller.

I like Token's idea of a tea olive tree - or how about a Magnolia? I love the scent of a Magnolia flower :mushy:.

I've got 3 or 4 Magnolias in the far backyard. Last summer, I placed a branch under the leaves on good black dirt/leaf compost. It took a year, but roots formed under the leaves. I transplanted it into my yard last week.

Lowes has them here. Most nurseries should have them or be able to get them.
