Possibly, sure. The point was to counteract the analysis Peter King did that Colin referenced many times. It portrayed the Panthers with little cap space. He wasn't taking into account the recent Demember contracts of Diggs & Carter. As soon as those inflated incentive's were not hit, it freed up another 7 million that was technically on the books.

 

what i'm saying is that isnt "crafty" management when players like Peppers, who you expect to be pro bowl level players, arent making their incentives...its a break financially, but also a huge disappointment on the field...

 

It doesn't say Peppers not making the pro bowl is crafty management.

 

and the expected Steve Smith proration, which the King article didn't reference either. We built in $11.8 mil of space, and some of that was mentioned during the article's first post, but was ignored.

I know that a lot of the referencing of the article was to show how dire things were, partially to try to push Hurney out, but I said then and say now it's not as bad as it looked then. I think that's what UNCD's trying to say - it's not like we actually did that well at this, part of it was that we sucked - but that was $1.5 mil worth of the $13.3 mil we're saving, and had nothing to do with anything the team could help.

 

I guess I should read the article before commenting. In any case, I don't know how much Gantt is right about, but it's encouraging news if true. Regardless, while the Panthers may not be the second worst cap shape as suggested by the King article, we're still among the worst in the league. And we're in that situation because Marty Hurney is horrible at his job.

 

You should read the article first. As of now, it looks like we should be at least 20-26 million under the cap at the start of FA, and that's before doing anything with Peppers. If we extend him, we'll likely save around another 10 million, giving us more than 30 million in cap space. That's plenty to do whatever we need to this off-season. It's fair to say they have over paid for some players, but Hurney (and his team...i.e. Rogers) knows what he is doing when it comes to manipulating the salary cap.
