Brian VanGorder to Leave USC for Falcons

(WLTX) - Brian VanGorder's run as the defensive coordinator for USC is over before it started.

News19 has learned through a source in the USC Athletic's Department that VanGorder is leaving the school. The Atlanta-Journal Constitution says he's leaving to become the defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons.

His last job, before coming to USC, was as the Falcons' linebackers coach.

The link here is Mike Smith, who was hired Wednesday as the Falcons' head coach. Smith worked with VanGorder in Jacksonville, and the two are said to be friends.

VanGorder was hired by Steve Spurrier on December 19 to turn around a Gamecocks defense that gave up plenty of yards against the run down the stretch last season. He replaced Tyrone Nix, who left to become defensive coordinator at Ole Miss under Houston Nutt.

VanGorder perhaps is best known for his work at Georgia from 2001-2004. He helped make the Bulldogs' defense into top-ranked squads in the SEC.

There's no word yet on a possible replacement for VanGorder.

WLTX.com will have more information as it becomes available.

Van Gorder's a very solid coach. I'm surprised he had tried to go back to college, since he was doing well as a pro, but I'm not at all surprised to see him as a DC in the pros now.

Yes, unfortunately. Looks like they're giving their best shot at keeping up the last-to-first NFCS tradition.

they're OK, but they've not pulled any top notch guys. I like BVG, but he's still green in the pros. Mularkey's never built an offense, from the ground up, with a new QB. They're carrying over some staff, which might help, but they don't have a line coach, and that's a critical spot.
