i think using painters tape is harder than just free handing it. just use a professional brush not one you buy at walmart. it will make a world of difference. just keep a slightly wet rag with you and if you make a mistake it is easy to clean up right away so don't worry about that too much. If you have carpet that goes up under the trim, oh wait, you have hard wood floors. just take your time and keep a steady hand. i've never used those sponge type edgers you see at the store. my granpa don't allow such crap. So, i'm not sure how they do. a 2 1/2 inch cut in brush should be good or go a little smaller. And always do your trim work last!!!

I agree 100% with everything you just posted. One question, why do the trim work last? I've just painted 5 rooms and did everything like you mentioned but always did the trim first.

my gp's reason is that if you do the trim first, then you go and roll the walls, you are going to get paint splatter all over the trim that you have painted. Plus, when you cut in the bottom of the wall, it's okay to if you accidently get some on the trim because you're going to finish up with the trim work and can actually cover any mistakes and just give the whole look a more finished professional look.

I've worked a few summers with my gp's company.

Thanks :) Who knew you were so helpful?!

We do have carpet in our bedrooms - so what were you going to say about carpet?

You can buy some plastic to put on the floor.

I've been trying to think of the things we used to keep the paint off the carpet when doing trim. We had these 2 to 3ft. long pieces of thin metal. Looked like maybe it was a piece of old siding. I guess you could use cardboard but i don't think that would hold up very well. Plus the thin metal makes it easier to slide up between the carpet and the bottom of the trim. Brush on your paint the length of the piece you're using. Pull it out, wipe the paint off of it with a wet rag. Slide it in to the next section and repeat till you have done the whole room. Very important that you wipe it off between every use or when you slide it back in, you're going to get paint on your carpet.

Painting is toooooo easy to throw away money to someone to do. Break the vacuum off your ass and do it while the kids asleep. Tall walls just needs a ladder
