Looked for some Jake threads and all I found were bitchfests, so new thread.

I went looking around the web for football players who have had TJ surgery and the list is small. I found an article on Rob Johnson from '05 when he was attempting a comeback that made me change my (somewhat naive) expectations for next year, which were Jake would be fine. Maybe he will be but I'm pretty sure he won't be fine by camp, he won't be allowed to even start throwing until around April if he's going by the rehab schedule I found (6 months after surgery).

Camp will begin around 9 months post op, this is from the Johnson article:

We're going to have to have a plan other than Jake. At this point I'm leaning towards working hard with Moore all off-season and beefing up the OL so we can have an actual running game. Granted it's a big gamble, but there are drawbacks to about every other option I can see. We are already tight on cap, Carr's money will still be on the books, if we sign a vet it'll cost 2-3 million on top of that and I don't know there's one out there who will give us a significantly better chance to win than Moore will.

What do y'all think we ought to do?

i like Chuck's plan- this friday I'll put it into motion- but if that doesn't work for you:

Its inexpensive cap wise which is nice, but I think they might spend on a backup as a bit of a knee jerk even if that money could be better spent elsewhere. Its not a bad plan, and I wouldn't mind it either- just don't see it happening. There aren't any easy answers- especially since we have no idea about upcoming offseason moves/plans.

I would be inclined to go with Jake and Moore. Once Moore goes through an entire camp with us and knows the offense well he should be adequate.

Jake should be fine. He never had great arm-strength to begin with, so as long as it's not worse, he'll be okay, imho. Moore has a lot of upside for our future and would do well being tutored by a vet like Jake.

I hope we change our camp routines so we have a better idea of what we really do have in camp, so we aren't put in a situation like this again. Is it just me, or did the team seem as much in the dark as the rest of us about what Moore and Carr could really do??

I hope we find a between-the-tackles runner in the offseason. We haven't had one siince Davis.

It's not necessarily knee jerk to try to put together a veteran backup plan. David Carr being this bad doesn't mean all vets are.
If Moore can play this well, he could be an effective backup and a guy worth developing. With uncertainty over Jake's arm for the time being, we could certainly use something extra.

Yeah I understand thats its not entirely knee jerk I just think that between the weinke and carr 'eras' they will again try and find a better backup QB even if it means spending more which in turn will hurt us in other areas- say like having a journeryman player on vet min. backed up with an undrafted rookie at safety.

I'm not sure what SHOULD be done, but I'm betting we see:

    Jake
    Moore
    Basanez

    The all undrafted class.

I prefer dumping Basanez for a vet. Any vet but Carr. Hell - I'd take Harrington for the #3.

3? I'd take Harrington to push Moore to start the season and then use the outcome of that to determine our 2 and 3 behind Jake when and if he is able to return to form.

Moore has looked decent, but before we start jerking ourselves off, there's not much film on this guy. He's still got a lot do before it's proven he can play in this league.

Our training camp QB roster will probably look more like:
    Jake (rehabbing)
    Vet TBD
    Vet TBD
    Moore/Basanez competing
    Rookie TBD

Well, I do expect that they expected more ability out of Carr than they got. Other than forcing him into more 3-steps and rolling him out more, I don't know what the team could've done to enhance him. You can't force a guy to read a defense.

Moore, though, I don't know if we knew what to think with him, but I'd say we met his needs fairly well. Eased him in with 3 step drops until he could control his want to chuck it deep on routes that can get jumped.

Foster really hasn't been bad inside the tackles. His YPC may be suffering in part because he's getting so much inside and not much outside, but he's gotten a lot of tough yards inside. It's the fumbling that worries me, not that he's 3.5 instead of 4 ypc.
