Williamson's maternal grandmother, who helped to raise him and with whom he was very close, died last week and he returned to South Carolina, where he played a large role in arranging her funeral. He also had to make travel arrangements for several of his siblings, some of whom are in the armed services. He returned to the team on Wednesday as the Vikings began practicing for this Sunday's game against Green Bay.

That's fucked. He discussed it with Childress BEFORE leaving. As a Gamecock fan, I remember one of the reasons he left early was to help out his Grandmother.

It's not like the Vikings throw the ball...ever.

The team is going to protect themselves just like your bosses would. Would your boss let you take a week off with pay in that situation? I know that's a few drops in the bucket to an NFL franchise but what if it's one of those 5 mill a year types next time?

    Bereavement leave.

I got it to attend a funeral for my mom's sister.

Most major corporations have pto for that sort of thing.

I understand that NFL players don't get PTO like regular joes do, but there are situations that need to be taken into consideration. This is one of them.

It's not like he was taking time off for a vacation.

They were saying on Mike and Mike this AM that there is no "bereavement leave" policy in the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and if they made an exception then they'd be open to all sorts of fairness issues down the road.

But, even if your company allowed you a full week, that's 1/52 of your salary. We're talking 1/16 in this case. Would your company allow you over a month and a half of paid time? I wouldn't be surprised if the Vikes were secretly OK with this being reversed but I think they have to protect themselves against future possibly far more expensive situations.
