...yes, holding is breaking the rules of the game, and if caught, gets penalized. The Patriots also broke the rules of the game and are likewise being penalized.

I'll admit I didn't consult Merriam Webster for the definition of "cheating." But I do know that when you willfully break the rules to gain a competitive edge, it's called "cheating." I'm thinking Goodell agrees more with me than you, as $750,000 isn't chump change and the draft picks taken weren't second day picks.

I'm sure I won't be in the minority. But only time will tell.

It was a message to the entire league that he is cracking down on something that has gotten out of control. Jaws said last night on MNF that a large majority of the league is doing it and that they are all very good at it.

I never argued the point that lineman are not cheating when they illegally hold an opposing player. I even AGREED with you. And when lineman get flagged, the team gets penalized.

And the Patriots got penalized too. Some of it is tangible ($750,000 and draft picks), and some of it will be intangible (the "asterisks" and questions of character).

The Patriots need to hope that more teams get caught then. If several more teams get caught, it does not excuse the Patriots but does help with damage control.
