you know what is funny? is that 9er thinks I was saying the Jets would have the advantage in their 2nd meeting.

The Pats could shoot all the tape in the first half they wanted to, break it down, and get an idea what the Jets would do in situations, and know that as they game planned for them the 2nd time around.

I'm the idiot? Try some reading comprehension.

Thats a pretty tame punishment IMO. The money is chump change, Bill will make it up by christmas and thats pocket change to Kraft.

If Goodell found them guilty of cheating during that game i dont know why he didnt strip them of that victory. Its doesnt matter if the Jets sucked or not IMO or even if they even got to review that tape, they were caught in the act of cheating. If you cheat you get disqualified in every other sport that i know of, why the free ride here?

The loss of pick would mean more if it was their only #1 pick, but they have another that they usually use to trade on draft day anyway. I dont see much but a slap in the wrist here.

When you compare this to the Formula one punishment of McLaren of 100million and ALL their construction championship points, its a joke.

I imagine the extra info would help in other games, but while deciphering it would take time and coach resources, I imagine it would be more helpful with in-game adjustments. With enough time, there should be plenty of tape study to understand what a defense was doing in a prior game.

I would think that McLaren would get a lot more benefit from stealing technical plans than the Pats did by stealing signals.

Actually from what I understand they would have someone to break down tape and use it for second halves of games.

When you compare apples to apples, that is about 1/3 of the operating budget of that team. Ergo, if the salary cap is 90 million and equal amount would be about 30 million. Just to put in perspective.

So the Patriots should get fined like $35 million, no revenue sharing, income from ticket sales or concession, stripped of all their 2007 wins and not be eligible to score any points for the rest of the season, right?

Havings technical specs to a race car is different than videotaping signals anyone can see from the stands. For example, having F1 chassis information could tell them how big ferrari's fuel tanks are, and bypass much R&D time in general. That's cheating worse than what the patriots did. As far as everyone has been saying, it's still perfectly legal under nfl rules to sit in the stands with binoculars and write down what the signals of the opposing teams are, but you just can't tape them.

John Clayton (ESPN) was setting up a hypothetical situation where the tape is shot, they burn a CD of it, match up the play by play and make their assessment.

Clayton is a little off-base because ripping a DVD copy of the tape is a real-time process (if there is high-speed dubbing tech out there, I haven't seen it). It is a little more realistic, that the tape can be synced up with the game play-by-play that was kept (with real time "time coding" that cameras stamp on the tape), and coaches can review the taped signals at halftime. I don't think that is as likely as the Pats shooting the video, and then analyzing it later for a 2nd game with that opponent--especially effective for their divisional opponents.
