RICHMOND, Va. -- Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick accepted a plea deal Monday and lengthy prison sentence to avoid additional federal charges in a dogfighting case that has driven his NFL career to a halt.

"After consulting with his family over the weekend, Michael Vick has asked that I announce today that he has reached an agreement with federal prosecutors regarding charges pending against him," Vick attorney Billy Martin said in a statement.

"Mr. Vick has agreed to enter a plea of guilty to those charges and to accept full responsibility for his actions and the mistakes he has made. Michael wishes to apologize again to everyone who has been hurt by this matter.

All three of Vick's co-defendants have reached plea deals in the case. Vick had been facing a Nov. 26 trial date.

If I'm the NFL, the punishment I'd choose is he's banned from the NFL exactly the same amount of time he's punished by the court. For example if the judge gives him two years he's banned two years from the NFL once he's released.

Go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $100 million :policeman:

Also funny to see ESPN's montage time line of the case which fails to include Pasquerelli and Clayton talking about how he is unlikely to be indicted and how the search warrant doesn't name him specifically.

Falcons | Team will not release Vick now
    Mon, 20 Aug 2007 12:30:39 -0700

Updating an ongoing story, Sal Paolantonio, of ESPN, reports the Atlanta Falcons will not immediate release QB Michael Vick because of his upcoming guilty plea to federal dogfighting charges. The Falcons will wait for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to suspend Vick to release him, so they do not breach his contract. The Falcons will be able to recuperate some of Vick's guaranteed money if they wait for the suspension.

Yes. I'll at least give him credit with acknowledging reality. That's a step forward.
