give it up to Apple. They create a product to rival everything already out on the market, and get buzz about it even though it's the newcomer. They get people interested that weren't looking for a PDA, and they create a somewhat original design.

I hated how mp3 players became Ipods once Ipods came out. I don't like the way most of them work. But after they got in and got popular, it raised the game. I imagine it'll do something like that with the way phones work, and there's nothing wrong with that.

No idea whether it's worth a damn but it's interesting.

I wouldn't be so hard on it if it wasn't being heralded as the second coming. But you said it lives up to the hype, so now you've gotta defend that just like all of the apple fanboys.

    It's all about the functionality...
If the phone sound isn't all that clear, if it's hard to dial, and if I can't get it to synch my contacts with my regular contact list in my e-mail/pim, it has failed. And amazingly, those are the WORSE parts of the iPhone. The parts that are nice-to-haves are the parts they focused on most, and still failed! Then you get no voice-dial (sucks to you if the touch screen isn't perfect, which it isn't). Then you get no ring tones - might be nice since I sure hate most peoples selections and the volumes they set them to, but...

Non-expandable RAM, non user-replaceable battery - sucks for anyone using this $600 device for a video or music player!
SLOW ass network, use of full Safari browser, no tethering ability - sucks for anyone using this for a web browser (Safari is the worst browser on the market, behind IE, Firefox, Netscape, Opera, etc.)!

Beyond that, I'll never understand the desire to have phone-devices, and the iPhone is nowhere near the first, have touch-screens. It's just nutty that the phone # keys aren't there - that's like having a radio with the volume hidden.

I could go on and on. The iPhone we see today will go the way of the Lisa and countless other Apple products that didn't live up to the hype. Version 2 might address many of them, so the iPhone as a whole might succeed, but they choked this chicken.

The display. Put a keypad on there and the display can't be what it is.

Look - I can't defend the choice of network, though, and that is a critical mistake, particularly in generation 1, which can't be upgraded for non wi-fi broadband.

and what does that display buy you? video playback that's bigger than current phones? How often do you really think that'll be happening anyway? I just don't get it. It's all about bling, and the next shiny thing that comes along will get the fanboy attention that this crapper currently draws.

The display and the ease of use is the whole thing. I do get it. I think it will happen alot, now that there is a way to watch video that doesn't suck the way it does on other handhelds. Same with web browsing. It is as good as a laptop, and better because it fits in your hand.

I guess that's part of it - it's not made for businessmen. It's made for college kids.

I guess I don't see the appeal of watching vidoes on it. Maybe if/when they up the storage to the video IPod level.

My friend has ordered one. He's been waiting to replace his old phone which has been on the fritz for quite some time. I look forward to messing with it but just can't see switching providers for the first generation release.

It's beautiful to watch. The display is the best I've seen on ANY hadnheld, ever. I think it's glass. I have watched videos on handhelds 'because it can show them', but it's totally shitty quality compared to the quality of the iphone. The iphone display is what you would have hoped all the others were. I would regularly watch an iphone, just as I regularly watch videos on a desktop.

And as small as a youtube video is on a desktop, I doubt it's much smaller on the iphone. Plus the interface for videos and email is killer compared to anything i've seen.

No need for video storage when there's wifi access. Again, the suck is the shitty non wifi bandwidth.

Look - I'm all about hating on some hype. I haven't met many people who are as contrarian as I am. The iphone is cool - period.
