Couple years ago, I'd have been all for it. Now, I'm iffy.

Rodney Harrison sure did a lot to help the Pats. It also did a lot to hurt the Pats when he was out.

Add in that a Minter/Darius combo wouldn't exactly put a lot of confidence in our coverage, but it could put the fear of God in receivers.

Guess I'm okay either way. If we sign him, cool. If not, meh...

To answer my own question, I perused the roster and saw that we have 7 S's, 3 of which are rooks. Doesn't warm my cockles much.

Need less to say, Gantt doesn't think that we'll pursue Darius, but that's just his feeling.

... how much the Panthers like Nate Salley between now and opening day.

Jacksonville released SS Donovin Darius Thursday, a bit of a surprise move. Even if the Panthers don't make a run at him (and they've got the resources to if they choose), it'll trigger another domino wherever he lands.

Between moves like this one and the expected releases of some decent players in final cuts, the Panthers will have chances to add to a safety corps that's thin, thin, thin.

Asked Mike Minter about Salley's progress and the general state of the position the other day. His answer, in short: "A lot of people get discouraged about what’s going on right now, but we’re fine."

    Stay tuned.

yes, that's almost necessary. Darius is a better Shaun Williams - a guy who's pretty talented when healthy but has a storied injury history. He missed 5 games in 01, 2 in 02, in addition to 14 in 05 and 6 in 06. His 04 was very good though.

    ps

I loved the fake outrage after that hit. I guarantee you if it was the home team making that hit, the announcers wouldn't have used the word "head hunting". They would have played the tragedy music and gone to commercial.

I'd be cool w/ Darius. I've watched a lot of Jags games and I've always been a fan. I know he's missed quite a few games over the last two years, but he's a force when healthy and a major upgrade over what we have. He could hold down the SS spot for a year or two.

Darius does fine in zone. He's not Ed Reed but he did have a bunch of interceptions a few seasons ago. Anyway, it would be better than Minter/unproven player X.
