If I remember correctly, the old guard didn't like Earnhardt. There were plenty of people who said he couldn't drive worth a crap, he would just rely on running people off the track.

Everyone always dislikes the new guy.

well, I mean it was such a huge record to break. Right up there with Cal Ripken. Maybe if he straps a rocket to his ass and wins every race for the next three years he can get up close to Petty.

Yep. The new guy gets tons of shit. Earnhardt was a polarizing figure early. Not nearly as polarizing as Waltrip, but still a target.

The difference with Gordon, and a lot of fans have mellowed on him, is more of a sociological deal. The entire sport has changed in the last 15 years and left a lot of the good ol' boys behind in lots of ways. The Earnhardt-Gordon deal is just a manifestation of it.

Probably would make a great subject for Professor Reed at UNC.

    BV....

Jocko Flocko was the monkey that rode shotgun with Tim Flock. Tim was one of 3 Flocks in the early days of NASCAR, along with Bob and Fonty. Tim was named one of NASCAR's 50 greatest drivers just before he died.

BTW--you are the exception of Earnhardt fans. For the most part, they all count "1, 2, Dale, 4, 5...." I have heard you count in the past BV.

Agreed. I'd say Big Vito is the probably one of the only college educated, socialist leaning Earnhardt fans.

Not one of those rednecks in Darlington threw a beer can at Gordon Sunday. Imagine that.
