hope you're guess is closer than I am thinking but I doubt that Smittys agent was willing to equate his guy with Andre Johnson. Johnson is a solid #1 WR but he's not top 10.

Last season Chad Johnson, Harrison, Wayne, Roy Williams, Driver, Evans, Bolden, Holt, and blOwens all had more yardage than Smitty and he was 10th in receiving TDs also (tied with 7 others who had 8). He did miss a couple of games but I would think that could just as easily be a negative point in negotiating the extension.

I want him to be paid fairly but I don’t want our guys to get giddy and go tits-up based on a 2005 season that Smith may or may not get close to in the future. If they want to reward him for the past seasons that’s fine . . . give the man as big a chunk as they can part with THIS cap year. I just don’t want them paying him a shit ton of future guaranteed cash based on the assumption that he will be a top 5 WR for the next 6 years.

I’m starting to understand just how much of this sport is a business (unfortunately) and apparently it’s crucial to be as thrifty as possible. The pats are perfecting the art of “thriftiness” and I guess if we had won all those damn Super Bowls guys might be lining up to sign on cheap here just to get a ring. It just seems that little ol’ small market Carolina is going to have to pay through the nose regardless, and maybe our FO is hobbled due to that facet . . . I don’t know. I am just expecting Smitty and Peppers to be handed astronomical league-leading guaranteed salaries.

Different type player, but Johnson led the league in receptions last year and is the only receiver up to this point to get a big extension. Smith is a better player and therefore gets a percentage more.

No official terms yet, but Steve Smith's new contract extension gets him clearly into the top five highest-paid players at his position, and depending on how you twist the numbers, likely as high as second behind Indianapolis' Marvin Harrison.
For tearing up the remaining three years on his current deal, Smith will get a six-year package (which is balanced rather than back-loaded) worth around $45 million.

Okay, try not to gloat

you're pretty good at this money stuff . .. do you give financial advice?

I could use a lot of help there.)

interested to know more about that "balanced" part though. I wouldn't imagine that this extension will go un-restructured so maybe it's not as important exactly how he is paid. What are the chances Smitty makes 6 more years given his style of play? At some point there is a monsterous cap hit but that seems pretty common these days

six more years would be twelve years in the league. He might or might not see the end of this contract, but it's rare that players just sign a huge deal and play it out, then retire.

Is Smitty top 5? Who is better than him? OR . . . Who would you rather have than Smith? His negatives do not come close to outweighing his positives IMO but there are a couple of concerns that might make him less desirable than other WRs out there. The top two concerns go hand-in-hand and the recent “near injury” this weekend is an example. He is only 5’9” and his extremely aggressive style will cause him to sacrifice his body, even in practice. Therefore he is more likely to get injured than most. That sucks but it’s a risk worth living with because without that aggressiveness he’s not going to be the playmaker he is.

A definite NO to Moss and Owens because they will always be headaches. Chad Johnson is durable dynamic and entertaining as hell. He is a year and a half older than Smitty and I don’t think he’s as clutch as our guy so I would lean towards Smitty. Harrison is tempting because he’s going to have that Rice-like longevity but I‘d have to keep Smith over him. Wayne has benefited in large part from where he is so, pass. Roy Williams has started blossoming despite where he is so, maybe. Some of the young guys are interesting but would anyone here trade Smitty for the likes of Evans, Colston, or Edwards? Calvin Johnson hasn’t played a down yet but if he is going to live up to the majority of the hype then he’d probably be a yes. Who am I missing?
Looks like I’d keep Smitty and at the very least he is definitely top 5 . . .

I feel better about whatever it is we're paying him :biggrina:

Another link. While I have no problem with locking up SS, I wonder when Peppers gets his due. There wasn't any urgency to extend SS as he still had three years to go
