It easily could have been. Pats in fact needed the safety more, but could use Beason too with an aging LB corps. It could have flipped.

hell If we cut the deal with Cleveland and it was Weddle and Harris we'd be better off.

As much as I like the fact that we may have picked up three and maybe four starters, I would have taken the trade with Cleveland at the time (partly just to see what 2 picks in the first feels like).

If the guys we got in two play like they were ranked it's cool that we turned it down. I guess. This will be something fun to reflect on next winter.

If Rucker's healthy and Morgan can somehow manage to stay on the field, the only one with a chance to start this year is Kalil. We needed a starter at least a starting TE and one S out of these picks and got neither. As long as Fox and Hurney are running the show, you can forget about either it seems. They got caught with their pants down on the S pick not once, but twice. They can spin "value" all they want, they didn't address our primary needs. Neither C or WR were and trying to pass off a WLB as a replacement for Morgan doesn't help either.

I don't know about that. We could have reached on one at #14, but we'd all be bitching about that because clearly none of them were worth that spot. I guess you could say we shouldn't have traded down all the way to #25, but that's really parsing things. And maybe we could have traded up for Weddle, but at what price and would he really be worth it? I don't look at it as a case of front office failure, it was just a draft that didn't go our way in terms of our needs. It would have been great to have either Weddle or Zach Miller fall to #45, but it didn't happen. Instead of just taking some random TE or S who wasn't worth the spot, I'm glad they got guys who can play. We can fill in with veterans for now: http://proxy.espn.go.com/nfl/fa

There are some decent safeties on that list. Hopefully we sign one or two of them.

Eh. Not really. There are some acceptable stop gaps....but nothing really good.

To beat the dead horse .... 21 of 22 .... returning starters. Now that obviously does not mean we don't need upgrades; however, it does mean that to expect a "starter" with our 2nd round picks is a bit of a stretch no matter who we had drafted. That said, Beason has a good chance to start on the outside "when" Morgan returns. Dwayne Jarrett was an excellent pick imho because Colbert sucks and Carter is merely adequate. Jarrett has a solid chance to be our No. 3 this season so I see that as good value. I predict Kalil will be our starting center and the Hartwig disaster will end with his release. Hell, he could not get back on the field ahead of Hangartner when he returned from injury. That was a horrible FA move and we fixed it yesterday. DE was an obvious need in terms of young depth with "future starter" potential. Wheter or not Johnson is a "future starter" is probably debatable, but we'll see. I also have to say I disagree with those that see TE as a "need" position. I remember many saying Jeff King might be our starter before the end of the year ('06) and what a steal we got late round last year. We never used him....big surprise. With King and Gaines, I don't see TE as a "need" that would surpass Linebacker, DL, or offensive line. I was praying we did not waste a pick on Olsen!! The only "need" we did not address was safety and while I wish we had, it certainly is not a disaster.

You don't have a clue what you're talking about regarding Hartwig. Also, no one said that Jeff King might be the starter by the end of last season. I was King's biggest supporter last year and I only thought he could eventually become a starter.
