yeah, part of the underlying problem is I was shooting in a bar - hence, I was drinking and my "aim" wasnt the best ;) Because I was shooting with a 50mm lens on a 1.6 crop body, I was in relatively tight, so I didnt have a much crop room to "re-compose" in post. I'm not thrilled with the composition of most of the shots I took, and unfortunately, there's not much I can do about it after the fact.

Her pictures may be exposed better, but it's not because of the flash - we were both using the built in flash. In looking through some more of my pictures I found a picture of the other photographer and could read that she was using the 18-55 (kit). That means at best she was shooting at f/3.5. Could that explain the difference?

well, like I said, she's a professional in the strictest sense of the word - she gets paid to take pictures. They're mostly for web publication (they do offer them for sale, but I dont know how many they do).

I was really shocked to see her using the kit too, though.

I have noticed there are quite a few people who would like to be professionals, taking random jobs. When you me a real photo journalist or portrait person you know it right away.

It is a tough job and you have to be good. The one photo journalist I know, everytime I see him, no matter where, he has his camera over his shoulder.

I'm certainly not trying to be anything I'm not, but I've got my camera on me all the time. really 2 reasons - 1, it's so small and expensive I am a little weirded out leaving it in my car or at home for fear of it being stolen (I dont have the most secure house and it's out in the middle of no where), and 2) (and more importantly) I figure I'm not going to get any better without practice. I shoot SOMETHING daily. it may not be any good, and many days it ends up getting deleted as soon as it hits my computer - but I keep practicing.

I didn't mean to imply that. But you know what I mean. People who claim to be photographers who just want some gig somewhere to make some money.

That guy keeps his camera on him just in case he is somewhere something happens and he is on call for that reason(works for the Tennessean) He too has the same feeling about leaving his equipment in the car. It isn't cheap and it is his life work.
