According to Simmons agent, the Panthers weren't interested when he called.

Simmons is a starter, and probably looking for more money than we'd want to spend to have him be a temporary backup.

Plus, he's only an inside guy, so he can't offer what Draft did - cheap, versatile.

That, or the team's locked into the idea of using a draft pick there.

    Saints sign LB Simmons

NEW ORLEANS, La. --The New Orleans Saints signed linebacker Brian Simmons to a three-year contract on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Simmons was limited to 11 games with the Cincinnati Bengals last season because of a neck strain, but he still tallied 78 tackles and a pair of interceptions.

The 10-year veteran had 102 stops in 2005, along with four forced fumbles, four sacks and a pair of interceptions.

Simmons was a No. 1 pick by the Bengals in 1998 out of North Carolina and appeared in 121 career games, with 118 starts for Cincinnati. He has amassed 11 interceptions, 23 sacks and eight fumble recoveries during his career.
