I've got to get a new laptop soon and I'm not sure which chip is best. It'll be used for basic business functions and internet surfing through a home and business network.

So, AMD (turion?) or Intel (duo-core?)? and as always TIA.

I'm interested in seeing the responses concerning AMD because I've not used them, but the Intel Duo Cores whip ass.

I've got an AMD 2.4Ghz in my laptop. Overheats a lot, but it is over 4 years old. Got a Pentium Dual Core 3.0 in my desktop. It's fast. Really fast.

Have to say though, the laptop is almost as fast as the desktop when using photoshop, autocad, illustrator, etc. Both have 1gig of RAM.

Those core Duos are really nice for laptops.

The new AMD ones dont get as hot as Builder's did and run things very well, but I'd proabbly still go Intel for a lappy.

Desktop is the opposite. I love my dual core, low power consumption model (65w) Athlon 64 x2 4800+. Was cheap and super fast with multiple apps open. Lots of ram helps with that too.

As of now Intel over AMD. Not saying in 2 years I'll give the same answer, but currently Intel has the better processor by far.

I remember when AMD was said to be hands down better than Intel. That was at least 4 years ago though.

Intel duo core is clocking slightly faster than AMD's version but those numbers change version to version. They are really the only two competing in the home market. I build my own desktops and I have used AMD in the past few years because it is comparable performance for half the price.
