I think they asked Phillips what he thought of the hire, and he said it was fine with him. The Phins only gave them a 24 hour window to hire him.

Garrett is supposed to be the future head coach, but with only two years of NFL coaching experience they didn't feel that he was ready for that yet.

Yep. I think Jones gets too involved alot of times, but I think this one is fine.

I personally think that hiring a coordinator for any reason before hiring a head coach continues to undermine the head coach in pretty much the way that screwed the two before Parcells, and that made Parcells leave. It's fine if it works, of course, but that goes for almost anything. If it doesn't, of course, it's on Jones, and any head coach should be judged on what he could choose, not what he couldn't.

Why would anyone take a job where ultimately you'll take the blame for what goes wrong knowing that at least part of your staff aren't "your guys"? I guess they could get lucky and share a philosophy or at least blend well, but doesn't Jones see that he's at least handicapping anyone who comes in before they're even hired? He's rich so you'd assume he's at least a decent businessman but maybe he's got good folks working for him who are smarter.

He's not looking for someone to build the franchise. They feel that they're in a position and just need to compete. The candidates know coming in what Jones' intentions are, and if they have a problem with that then they don't need to interview. Personally I don't see it being a big deal, especially if the head coach is offense-oriented since he can control the offense and have Garrett assist.

it's very rare that a coordinator be hired before a head coach. It's not completely unlike choosing whether to keep an existing coordinator, but you don't get to choose.
That, and IMO, Garrett isn't someone I think of as the remarkably bright mind Jones does. He's not awful, but I haven't seen the heaping praise and have to consider that part of it's simply that Garrett was a Cowboy for a while.

Garrett was there when Turner was there? If so then maybe they will mesh well.

That's not the case. Some AFC team asked to interview Garrett for their OC position but was turned down, and I've read other ESPN and SI stuff suggesting that he's an up and comer. You probably just haven't heard much since he's only been a coach the last two years.

Yeah, ive heard that mentioned a few times, a much better football mind than an actual player. Has he only been in the coaching ranks two years now? I thought i remembered him as a QB coach in some capacity before.
