From the same blog as the Boller thread: Inside the Panthers

I can't recall ever reading about a team asking for permission to speak to McCoy from any other source.

it's all his agent. He's the one speaking to guys as "sources". He's probably telling Yas that info to try to influence would-be interviews.

What is McCoy's deal anyway? I don't even think I heard the name before Henning was fired. Why are people so down on him?

young, came in basically as an intern, got promoted to QBs coach because Henning didn't want to hire a real position coach when he was first hired, and then put McCoy in the role just to fill it. He's really just not proven himself in any form but his agent has been talking about him as a future coordinator somewhere for over a year.

Hmmm, our QB coach or Cincy's QB coach? Not really a tough decesion. I certainly hope we don't promote someone because he has a sly agent. Skipper would not be so bad, but I really would like a fresh set of eyes from outside the team.

agree on the fresh eyes first off. The idea of this decision should be to improve, not just replace. I'd feel like, if we went totally in-house, we're more likely to do it just to save face; that goes down the line to where Magazu becomes OL coach just to not rock the boat, and Chryst gets the TEs coach job just because he's already here.

Then we've not improved at all - and then I buy the talk of scapegoating. I buy that the offense wasn't where it should've been, but that it wasn't the major reason this happened.

And second, yeah, of the two in house, it's Skipper, not McCoy. He has the experience, he's the one getting actual nibbles from other organizations (he'd gotten some talk, I thought I'd read, in 04 and 05, from a couple franchises and a few colleges as well), and he's done it before.

I worry that they're going to sacrifice quality for the sake of keeping a playbook. And I'm a bit worried that McCoy's agent's posturing and his age will make him look like a really promising prospect that "just needs the chance", which is without substance.

Fox should be able to tell whether a guy on his own staff has the ability to get it done or is just the product of his agent's hype. If he has not been refused the ability to interview elsewhere and his agent is putting it out there that he has that may turn Fox off to him all together.

I thought that was the reason Henning was going. Its not like he appeared to rub people the wrong way. He became the scapegoat because of the conservative O he may or may not have been told to run, NO.

I really dont want to see the same playbook. I want freshness too.

My specific issues with Yasinskas take here are as follows:

    - Like Magnus, I find myself thinking that he might be putting too much stock in the "agent" connection (Fox and McCoy having the same agent). I'd really hate to think that this sort of thing had any weight whatsoever in Fox's decision. If it did, I'd be disappointed.

    - As mentioned, he says a lot of teams have inquired about McCoy and been turned down. Sites like KFFL, PFT and even ESPN report items like that all the time. I've never seen McCoy mentioned anywhere but the Observer (and even there I can't honestly say if it came from anyone other than Yasinskas).

    - Along the same lines, the Panthers don't have a track record of stopping assistants from advancement when the chance comes about. Just as a recent example, Paul Ferraro wasn't stopped from seeking other employment (ST coach with the Vikings). If this many chances came up for McCoy, would they really stop them all?

    - Lastly, he calls McCoy the "golden boy" of the Panthers staff. I ask, based on what? What has he actually accomplished that would give him that sort of status? He's bounced between positions with the team since even before Fox was here, and he's excelled in none of them. If that's a "golden boy" then this team must have pretty low standards.

McCoy makes no sense to me when there are better alternatives, and there definitely are.

yeah, that's the thing. Even if we take the paper and the agent at their word, there are still more esteemed, more experienced guys out there. On staff, even.
