Except that we were, and we did. Coaches routinely get fired for reasons that have little to do with performance.
We targeted Steve Smith more per game this season than we did in 2005 (10.1 vs. 9.4). We completed less passes to him because Jake was inaccurate, but he still caught more passes per game than all but 4 receivers.

we weren't above average, and getting fired in a year you finish 24th in yards and 27th in points isn't "little to do with performance." The conspiracy theories can stop, he's had enough failure.

Points in one season when you fall forward on 12 TDs isn't exactly prime performance. 2003's offense wasn't that good for the first half of the year at all. All our decent offensive performances have basically been at the hand of one elite player in some form. We're not above average offensively and we struggled to get to average.

As well, the one thing we were to set out to do, we've consistently been unable to do.

and yet the production dropped off at the end of the year when we didn't have an answer for the double. And the O tanked.

Hurney was just on our show saying he and Fox made the decision....no, I am noty sold on it--they were involved, but I think ownership had the loudest voice...

Bingo, as far as I'm concerned. And it's why Maser went too.

Yeah. "We made the decision" can mean a lot of things, and doesn't necessarily mean they made it alone or without it being "suggested" from upstairs.

I've said before I don't think Fox and Hurney outright lie. They just don't tell the public everything, and what they do tell has it fair share of spin and vaguery.

Surely none of the three men could have been happy with the outcome of putting so much into the offense and watching it sputter, cough and wheeze.

undoubtedly. The idea that it's anything other than the logical, expected reason or that there are conspiracies involved, just seems to ignore that we were expected to be good, and weren't.

Now I do think that statement is signficant. Also the fact that Hurney is doing the talking. If Fox originated this, Hurney would likely not say they made it together.

I'm perfectly OK with it if JR and Hurney pushed Fox. I don't think its obvious that they did, but possible. I'm not sure Fox is a great Xs and Os guy, especially on O. Some D coaches understand O, but not all. Fox's strength is in leading people.

I also think its significant that you think JR had a loud voice. Sometimes actually listening to the tone of voice, the body language, etc., of the people can be telling.

    All interesting.

If JR was pushing, maybe the delay was working that out. If Hurney was a facilitator in this (his strength), then good for him. I hope he has a voice in the hiring of the O replacements. I think Fox knows how to replace the secondary coach.

For the record, Hurney made no mention of ownership in his statements...it's just my gut saying that. i could be wrong, and it could have been all Fox and Hurney....I don't beleive it was just the 2 of them though.
