We held Cincinnati under 20 points and Palmer to his lowest yards per pass average of the season. If not for Lucas' illegal contact penalty on third down at the start of their second scoring drive no one would even be questioning the defense. Honestly they weren't that bad, they just weren't dominant like they were in the first quarter.

Jenkins had a solid game, but as noted by mags in the chat, he has gotten so infatuated with penetration that he's developed the bad habit of guessing and shooting a gap. Cincinnati exploited that by doubling Rucker and running to his side in the second half. That wouldn't have been so crippling if our LBs didn't play their worst game since Atlanta. Thomas Davis was missed, while Chris Draft had his worst game in a good while by frequently guessing wrong as well. The LBs were also awful in coverage.

Peppers and Rucker had several hurries, so they weren't exactly neutralized, but Palmer was dumping the ball short and Trgovac misused Julius again. We had him dropping a lot, stunting to the inside (which is a total waste of his talents), and blitzing people outside of him (which prevents him from attacking the edge). The one move he needs to add to his repertoire is Freeney's spin where he attacks the outside shoulder of the tackle and then spins back to the QB instead of allowing himself to be ridden out beyond the pocket. In any case, it didn't seem like Cincinnati even tried to run at Peppers' side very much.

Regarding the secondary, the dropped interceptions were obviously huge, but I think the corners were solid overall. The safeties are really killing us, though. Sometimes it only looked like their fault when it was actually a LB who missed his assignment on the TE, but a lot of times Williams and Minter were just out of position. When we can just get decent play from our linebackers and safeties, we can be a dominant defense. When we can't, we get exposed, and credit the Bengals for identifying our weaknesses and attacking them.

Someone did for sure. I'll take your word it was Draft. It looked like Minter was doing a "Oh no he's open" coverage. Those are usually late.

Nice comments. Hasn't Jenks done that all through his career?

I was more disappointed in the O than the D.

Maybe Cinn is closer to that team that was so good last year than we thought. They were playing even with TB, and TB seems like they've corrected some of the things that had them playing poorly too. I guess they've got their missing OL back, and C. Williams I guess is not hurt anymore.

I thought Cincinnati looked average. We shot ourselves in the foot with stupid decisions and stupid plays more than they beat us, except for that beautiful pitch and catch on 4th and 1.

But yeah, the O gave plenty of reason for disappointment. Smith's drops were irritating, but really the big thing was that the offensive line looked awful for the first time since Atlanta. The tackles were getting walked back and the interior guys didn't do a good job of reading the blitzes or opening holes. In my opinion, the O-line was easily the main culprit in our loss. Jake's idiotic throw is somewhat mitigated by what a good game he had otherwise.

If Delhomme had not thrown that interception and we would have run the ball then kicked a FG if necessary.....we would all be saying how great the Panthers played.

Our Corners/Safeties got abused after the catch....WRs ran all over the DBs in the second half....they moved the ball on 5-10 yard routes, then ran for another 5-10 yards after the catch.

and yes the INT drops were HUGE.
