At the end of the AZ/StL game, StL punted and it was fair caught by AZ.
There was an offsides penalty against AZ. StL declined it, then AZ said they were entitled to a free kick.

When StL realized that AZ could try a 73 yard fieldgoal, they changed their mind about declining the penalty.

What is this about changing your mind after the decision was official?

Thank you, but no one answered the question as to why StL was given the option of changing their decision after it had been made official by the referee.

The rule about getting a free kick if you fair catch a punt or kick off is well known. It happens once or twice a season.

PS. I edited where I said StL caught their own punt.

Warner fumbled at the AZ 18. Forget rulings. Rams deserve to win when he gacks like that.

The Panthers deserved to win against Minnesota. We didn't get the opportunity to change our minds about the punt-return-lateral-jugfuck.

If the Rams don't know that you get a free kick after a fair catch they should have to live with that decision.

Maybe we should ask Collin or Magnus.

I'm tempted to send Kurt a check. Maybe someone else already did though.

Based on what I know, coaches have the right to change their minds if they don't initially understand the implications of the penalty. I've seen this happen before. Had the official done a better job of explaining it in the first place, none of this would have happened.

I would think that a league where you wouldn't allow chaging the call on a coin flip in mid air wouldn't allow for changing penalty calls.

Of course that's obviously what happened. I just wondered if there was anything in the rule book about this because it doesn't make sense.

I think that if the referee announces that the penalty is declined, then the team that declined it should have to live with the results.

Let's say you make in ill-advised challenge (throw the red flag). Then you see the stadium replay and realize you will lose that challenge. Can you then retract it?
