my guess on the whole play is that the toss was an option on the return if the right circumstances presented itself, and Fox said "what the fuck was that" because he couldn't believe Gamble saw an obvious "not the right situation" and threw it anyway.

It was not a called play. I'll post the proof with screenshots of the blocking and the video of Fox's reaction later. Fox is just doing what he thinks is right as a head coach and taking the heat.

there are too many other things that can happen independently, with only one of them being "wrong" for this to be how it ended up. Could've been Marshall misreading; could've been Gamble misreading. A lack of blockers doesn't matter as PR rarely have blockers and the play was designed to draw defenders away.

If Fox says it's a called play, it doesn't excuse or explain the problem on the field. And if Fox says it's a called play, I believe him. "What the fuck" doesn't state that it's not. It doesn't excuse what happened on the field, it doesn't mean Gamble didn't have a poor throw or even a poor read. If he says he knew, I believe he knew. If he says he knew and didn't, then we have much bigger problems of this head coach having no control of his team and not reacting as if something happened that he didn't allow.

I'll buy Fox is the type to take the heat if it wasn't called, but I don't buy it wasn't.

I think it was a called play/option that was seriously mishandled. If Gamble has balls enough to think he can do that shit on his own then he has huge balls and a tiny tiny brain.

Yeah, if Fox was in the dark, that's a concern, but it's still a concern to me if he did know. I don't see why a play like that no matter who is trying to execute it would even be an option. Road game, winning, defense playing pretty well over all why get cute? Why a conservative team get cute? I'm not excusing Gamble or any of the players, but I just don't see why that play is even on the table to begin with at that point in this game.

Fox's reputation as a players coach makes your statement very true. he'll fall on the sword rather than call his own guy out.

Bet your ass, Gamble gets worked over in private, though.

When was the last time Fox called a play as bold as this?

Take what Ethan Horton said with a grain of salt, but he seems to think that maybe the coaches saw something with the Vikes' STs in film study and tried to take advantage of it. I don't know.
