    HIGHLIGHT PLAYS

    * Graves gets the first basket (after several misses from both sides) with a 3 from the left corner and Ginyard hits a 3 from the same spot on the next possession.
    * Ginyard hauls in a rebound and takes it coast-to-coast, leaving a colliding Scott and SWilliams in his wake
    * Graves takes a handoff pass off a curl and hits a 3, Blue takes 11-2 lead
    * Led by a couple JWilliams 3s, the White's 9-0 run is stopped by a free-throw line extended McDonald 3
    * DWear hits a turnaround jumper from the elbow and then drills a deep 2 on next possession
    * DWear stuffs a JWilliams drive
    * SWilliams hits Scott on a pretty give-and-go for a contested layin
    * DWear bounce pass to a trailing Zeller for a big dunk (Zeller got up!)
    * Henson takes a pass on the perimeter and dribbles/twists his way through traffic for 2
    * Henson does his best Noel vs. Gardner-Webb impression by hitting a three that bounces all over the rim before going in
    * Henson swats a Holley layup attempt with his left hand (Henson's left hand)
    * SWilliams sneaks behind Davis and blocks his shot from behind
    * TWear passes to a cutting Henson for an up and under layup
    * McDonald blocks a Scott three-pointer
    * TWear hits a turnaround righty hook (more like a Hansbrough one-handed than a true hook)
    * JWilliams blocks Zeller as he goes up in the lane, but Zeller quickly goes back up with it for a swished righty hook
    * SWilliams goes strong to the hole for an and-1 on two post defenders
    * JWilliams outmuscles Zeller on a drive from the perimeter, turning the corner on him and getting to the hoop uncontested
    * Ginyard inbounds pass to cutting DWear for an impressive left-handed jam
    * Ginyard skies way up to corral a rebound (something he couldn't do if he was still really injured) and zooms upcourt to trigger a fast break
    * DWear steals a pass in the lane and runs the break, dishing to Ginyard for the layin
    * JWilliams stuffs Graves under the hoop with both hands
    * Ginyard draws rain with a high-arcing deep 2
    * Frasor chases down offensive rebound (just like in the Final Four) and on the next possession Frasor makes an impressive finish on the break on Ginyard for an and-1
    * Zeller backs down Bradford for a righty hook, then comes right back on the next play and quickly gathers a loose ball under the hoop and goes right back up for two before others can react and on the very next possession he posts up JWilliams and spins to splash the righty hook from the baseline
    * Davis finds a cutting Graves for an and-1
    * Frasor ties up a driving McDonald (much like he did vs Henderson last season)
    * Henson grabs an offensive rebound and goes right back up with a nifty lefty fingeroll
    * Strickland connects on a deep baseline jumper from the corner
    * McDonald drives hard left from the right corner and goes strong to the hole for an and-1
    * Strickland hits a 3 from free-throw line extended over Frasor
    * DWear catches the defense off-guard but spotting up and hitting a 3
    * Zeller spins right yet again to splash another righty hook
    * Calabria hits three straight three pointers and then a JWilliams dunk caps an 11-0 White run that gives them the lead
    * Frasor plays great D on Graves on the perimeter to force a tough fadeaway jumper and then sprints to beat Graves back and JWilliams makes the long one-handed pass that gives Frasor an easy lay up
    * DWear goes to his righty half-hook and hits it, despite falling to the baseline to the point of being nearly behind the backboard
    * Ginyard records the Play of the Day by stuffing a missing Graves three with two hands. He came soaring through the lane to grab the offensive rebound at its high point, and with two hands he stuffed it. Hands down, the play of the day.
    * Graves leads the break and makes the mistake passing it to DWear, who has Frasor waiting for him to perfectly draw the charge
    * After the White team misses three potential game winners, Graves drills a 3 for the win.

    NOTES

    * First and foremost, this game was very different from the game I wrote about last week. You can see it by looking at the rosters that the alumni team didn't exactly have the same level of talent that it had in last week's game. They were loaded last week and overwhelmed the current team in both talent and physicality, but this week it was basically the Jawad Williams and Shammond Williams show. Jawad hit a bunch of threes, drove hard to the hole a lot (he often had mismatches of a post player like Zeller on him out beyond the 3pt line) and collected a ton of rebounds. Didn't stat the White Team, but I bet Jawad had well over 25 points and was definitely the game's high scorer. Shammond ran the point and while he scored some, he recorded a bunch of assists running the show for the White Team. The second big difference from last week's game that I wrote about was the level of intensity - and this was mostly because it was a close game that went down the wire and both teams visibly didn't want to lose. Even for just a pickup game, the level ratcheted up at the end, with both benches standing, jumping, and such on each play and Shammond and Calabria working the refs a bunch. The game ended in thrilling fashion, as the White team had the ball at 78-78 and it was first to 80 wins. Jawad missed a game-winning jumper, Shammond got the offensive board and tried to get by Ginyard but couldn't and missed a tough shot, and then on another offensive rebound Calabria had a wide open three for the win and he missed. The blue team raced up court with the rebound, found Graves deep in the corner and he hit the three for the win, as he was mobbed by teammates at center court (while some White Team members exited quickly in disgust).

    * Some notes from beforehand to get out of the way. Henson had the best dunk in warmups, with an effortless windmill, but Strickland looks like the team's best dunker - he showed it in layup lines. Looking around the Smith Center these last few weeks, I think (hard to remember what was) there are new lights atop the arena and new speakers hanging from the rafters. Assume that's the new lighting and sound system that's been discussed.

    * This was a much better setting to watch the freshmen than last week. First, they haven't just arrived on campus a couple days ago (but I guess it's only been about 10 days) so they are a little more comfortable. Second, they weren't going against an NBA front line, so it was a less intimidating (psychologically and physically). Third, they got much more playing time than last week. Breaking them down individually, Henson was more active around the hoop and continues to run the floor like a gazelle. He's okay dribbling in the open court, but had some struggles dribbling in the half court, which makes you wonder about him playing the 3. He looked much more at home mid-range and in when in the halfcourt set, but again, he's going to be a great open floor weapon like Zeller. Strickland's best trait he showed today was playing some real tough defense. Shammond outmuscled him a few times, which is understandable since Strickland is just a skinny frosh. Overall it was tough to gauge his overall game, because he didn't start (Campbell did) and Ginyard was the de facto PG in key situations, so he wasn't as involved as some others. McDonald put on a three-point shooting exhibition at halftime, hitting 9 in a row at one stretch (including one that it sure looked like he banked from the corner on purpose). I think all the freshmen are still in the phase of thinking they need to defer, so keep that in mind and consider that they aren't doing as much good or bad as they would if they didn't defer so much. McDonald seems the most fearless overall, in that he's battling for the ball, driving hard, but he wasn't nearly as involved as he could have been. Of the Wears, David had the better game, showing more versatility (nice steal, smart passes, scoring on the block, scoring from the perimeter) and was very impressive in doing so during stretches. Neither crashed the boards hard - that was noticeable.

    * Of the current team, Ginyard again looked again to be in good shape and didn't show any signs of the foot injury. From an athletic standpoint, he got very high for two rebounds and then showed big-time ups for the play of the day mentioned in the highlights, where he caught the offensive rebound well above the rim and slammed it home. And he ran the point guard role in crunch time, that was very clear. Another big thing I took away from this game was the play of Tyler Zeller. He's not outmuscling bigger opponents, but he's battling and he has a unique way of using his wingspan to reach out and tip rebounds to himself or others. He's a savvy rebounder in that sense. On a single second-half possession he had four offensive rebounds. On offense, his hook (it's really more a half-hook as no one shoots the Kareem hook anymore) is quick and really smooth and it's that way with either hand, which makes him tough to defend. Jawad managed to outmuscle him defensively a few times, but Zeller was persistent and quick to go back up. Graves was the leading scorer, though it needs to be mentioned that he took the most shots and committed the most turnovers. His offensive game showed a little more balance, in that while he took a number of threes, he also looked to put the ball on the floor, work down low and move without the ball. And you couldn't miss how he was his affable self, chuckling it up with teammates on the sidelines when he was out of the game and making teammates laugh with some inaudible jokes at halftime. It was an uncharacteristic game for Davis, who was pretty quiet.

    NOTES:

    * The first big pickup game for the freshmen is always a learning experience. Having arrived on campus only a few days ago ,they’re somewhat timid – not assertive like the rest of the guys out there – and are more about fitting in then making a splash. I’ve seen many big time freshmen not look themselves in their first big pickup game (Hansbrough struggling against Vasco Evtimov comes to mind). With that preface in mind, none of the five freshmen had a big game, plus they all were coming off the bench at the start of each half and so didn’t play heavy minutes.

    * The only freshman that scored was McDonald, and he was by far the most assertive. He arrived late (didn’t play in the first half) but took five jumpers (quick looking release) and hit two of them and went to the hole a couple times.

    * Strickland played the point when he was in and made a couple nice passes. In terms of looking to score, he missed a jumper and in his one drive to the rim, took a hard foul from Felton, resulting in a bloody nose and he was sidelined for the rest of the game.

    * Henson didn’t get involved on offense and on defense he tried to block a few shots, but was unsuccessful. One play on defense left the biggest impression: May got out ahead on the break and Henson caught up with him as May took the pass and set himself under the hoop. Henson was clearly going to try to block it, but May put down his shoulder and this bulldozer move caught Henson by surprise and sent him back a few feet, leaving May alone for the easy layin.

    * Don’t think the Wears recorded any stats, but it seemed like they weren’t in much at all.

    * It was no surprise that the alumni team won this one. They not only had more talent, but the game had a ‘Men vs. Boys’ feel to it. Part of that was age and experience – and talent - but it was a size issue as well. Haywood had a huge game because no one could stop him. You think Davis is tall and long, but next to Haywood he looks like a little kid in all aspects. Haywood has at least three inches and a lot of weight on him and just looked like a monster in the post. Credit to Davis who still managed to get a lot done against other guys, but Haywood was just a tough matchup on both ends. One observed commented: "Haywood's like an aircraft carrier in there patrolling the lane."

    * A bit more on Davis, who fared very well considering he was giving up inches and pounds to everyone out there, and yet scored a lot, going to the lefty move again and again. His best play, which I should have put in the highlights section, was when he missed a low post shot and bounced so quick back off the floor that he follow dunked his own shot while Stackhouse and May looked up.

    * For those wondering about Ginyard’s physical condition, it’s impossible to really say if he was feeling pain or not, but he certainly played very hard and got up pretty high for some offensive rebounds and tip attempts. He took more perimeter shots than usual, but went hard to the hoop more than a handful of times (and had some trademark missed bunnies). In terms of whether or not he was notably “not himself physically,” that was not apparent at all.

    * Was tough to accurately stat rebounds (I only did points and assists), but Zeller had a bunch and he was battling hard against bigger guys (such as May). He had a lot more fight in him in the post than a year ago on the boards, even if he did get outmuscled for some. His hook shots and short jumpers were accurate and he’s able to get them off very quickly.

    * Shammond Williams and Haywood win the trash talk award. Haywood had a lot of words for Davis, while Williams both talked (and joked) and was physical – he didn’t let up at all on the younger guys. In one sequence he bulldozed Campbell along the sidelines, leaving the walk-on lying on his back dazed.

IC spoke with Tyler Zeller on Tuesday afternoon, and the rising sophomore indicated that he currently weighs 240 pounds - up from 212 when he stepped on campus last fall.

Scout.com’s No. 2 prospect in the Class of 2011 is off the board.

James McAdoo, according to a source, committed to North Carolina after considering Duke and Virginia. Scout.com will have comments from McAdoo later in the evening.

McAdoo committed to North Carolina during an unofficial visit Friday night. UNC hosted its professional alumni game and had numerous prospects including Reggie Bullock (No. 12), Kendall Marshall (No. 21) and the top-ranked player in 2010, Harrison Barnes on campus. Former NBA super star Michael Jordan was also on campus visiting his old school.

McAdoo, a 6-foot-8 power forward out of Norfolk (Va.) Norfolk Christian, was thought to be UNC’s top target in the junior class. He was a gold medalist for the U.S. 16 and under team last summer. He missed all of July with a torn labrum.
