The NFL is cyclical and OC's have had time to adjust and figure out defenses like Seattle and Carolina. I believe Bill Belichick is the best coach in NFL history because he constantly stays ahead of what every other coach is trying to copy. The Patriots haven't been one thing. They've vacillated between being smash-mouth and wide open and they're the only team to have a winning record every year since 2001.

edit: I mean, he also cheated like a ************, but whataya gonna do?

Nope. Brian isn't their QBOF. He will be good another year or so, but that's it.

According to PFF, Hoyer leads all QB's in passing yardage on balls traveling 16+ yards in the air. In other words he appears to have some real playmaking ability, and is not just a game manager type. It's obviously too early to call him the next Bernie Kosar, but he's only 28 and I won't be surprised if he hangs around there for a while and becomes a Delhomme-esque QB for them. Pettine liked him from the very beginning and the Manziel pick was almost certainly pressured by ownership.

The problem is that Hoyer is depending entirely on the deep ball for success right now, as his completion percentage is 27th in the league. And I think a fair amount of that is coming from play-action with defenses focused on the run given that Cleveland has the third fewest pass attempts per game with the second most rush attempts. I agree about Hoyer potentially being one of those competent Delhomme types that teams can win with, but I don't really agree about him being a playmaker. I think the most you can ask of him is to take what the defense gives him. Manziel is a playmaker, but also a much greater risk. Right now there's no need to choose between them because Johnny is under contract through 2017 (and can be extended to 2018 as a 1st round pick). Play out the season, make Manziel earn it, and see what Hoyer's contract demands are after this year.
