3 years, $22.5 million. I'd say that's a pretty fair deal for both sides. He almost certainly would have gotten more on what is shaping up to be a batshit crazy free agent market. 3 year deal recognizes the fact that he's on the wrong side of 30. He's currently the best DE on our roster. If he can maintain last year's production I'd even call it a bargain.

"In 2014, when the Panthers gave defensive end Mario Addison a two-year extension, he celebrated with a trip to Puerto Rico in which he almost drowned when he fell of a jet ski. He's planning a trip to Germany to celebrate his new three-year deal. "No jet skis. No water,'' Addison said. "I'm not dealing with any water until I learn how to swim.'' Good decision."

    Brilliant.

I wouldn't have made a pass rush specialist the 15th highest paid defensive end in the league. He has to become an every down player now.

Trust me, he wont be 15th highest by the time the league year starts. Also, I generally favor players who defend the pass well in the modern NFL. Last season he was already an every down player when healthy.

He doesn't have to play on the grunt work downs. I have no problem with it.

According to what I've read, Addison played only 41% of the team's defensive snaps this past season. It's worth noting that Robert Ayers signed for $19.5 million over three seasons a year ago despite having very similar pass rushing numbers while being a much better run defender than Addison. For the sake of comparison, PFF had Ayers as the 10th best defensive free agent a year ago and Addison as the 39th best defensive free agent now. Depending upon the amount of guaranteed money this isn't the end of the world, but it isn't something I would have done.

Yeah you are right, I shouldn't have said every down, but he was a starter over the final month of the season. They like to rotate all the D-lineman frequently to keep them fresh. I'd make two comments about that Robert Ayers signing:

    1. Carolina should have signed him if he's that cheap - I'm too lazy to check if he actually hit the open market
    2. I think you are about to see a large market "correction" of sorts this offseason. 28 teams have at least $20 million to spend. The Browns have over $100 million to spend, and according to the CBA, they HAVE to spend it. So even a mid tier free agent like Addison would have cashed in. I just don't think it's fair to compare this season's free agents to years past. I think you got a taste of it with the crazy money the Giants threw around last offseason.
