I think I do this every January, and it's extremely important.

    1) Bill Belichick
That's not a great roster up there, and he's partly responsible for that, but as an HC this might be his best job yet. When you go 11-5, get the #2 seed, and everyone's talking about what's wrong, then you might be a Boss.

    2) Andy Reid
It's strange that he had to hire a "game management" coach. As a pure X's and O's coach, I think he's #1, and I think that's been the case for a while.

    3) Sean McVay
Hired Wade Phillips, in part, to offset his inexperience. Defers credit to other people. He's a legit leader, in addition to being a great play designer and maximizer of talent. He's the one coach who checks all the boxes.

    4) Pete Carroll
Seven winning seasons in nine years. Their low mark has been 7-9, only twice. One of those was a division title and a playoff win in a rebuilding season. He just took another rebuilding team to the playoffs. He's not going anywhere, and neither is Seattle.

    5) Sean Payton
Frankly, I think their GM deserves more credit for the turnaround. I can't completely ignore the fact that he went 7-9 three straight years with Drew Brees as his quarterback, in a pretty crappy division. I think he's a much better version of Mike McCarthy with a Vicodin addiction.

    6) Doug Pederson
I was high on him, and then I was doubting him, but man, what a job this year. I'd give COTY to him or Pete. There are some cap problems brewing in Philly, but they should be able to weather the storm. I can't think of a team that's made the playoffs consecutively after losing their starting quarterback, at least not off the top of my head.

    7) Mike Tomlin
I said earlier in the week that the "players coach" bit only works with the right kind of players. Tomlin is a delegator, which is perfectly fine, but that requires players who are self-disciplined. The stuff with Brown and Big Ben has really gotten out of hand, and I'm not sure Mike is the right guy to fix it. But, his body of work is still sensational. No losing seasons in 12 years.

    8) John Harbaugh
I feel like I should be putting him higher on this list, but he stuck with Joe Flacco forever, and if not for Flacco's injury, he might have never made the change. He's an excellent coach, but there's some serendipity in their success this year. They've leveled off quite a bit since their 2012 Super Bowl victory. Some of that is bad drafting.

    9) Bill O'Brien
I'm higher on him than most, I guess. He hasn't had a franchise quarterback until now. Prior to that, they got a lot out of a little. He led a JJ Watt-less, Brock Osweiler/Tom Savage QB'd team to the divisional round of the playoffs in 2016. With four winning seasons in five, including three division titles, they've become an outlier in the "YOU CAN'T COPY PATRIOTS" meme. They better start finding more success in the postseason, though.

    10) Jason Garrett
He's always tough to grade. It's not like Jerry Jones is gangbusters as a GM, but they've found success in recent years in spite of this. I think 2018 was a legitimately solid coaching job. There was plenty of chaos early with the offensive line and the 3-5 start. They finally got him a WR, which helped. I don't think he's ever going to "hurt" a team, basically. If you give him good players, he won't fuck it up.

    11) Dan Quinn
    See above

    12) Ron Rivera
    See above

    13) Anthony Lynn
    See above

    14) Mike Zimmer
This was an ugly year for Zimmer. I know they have offensive line issues, but this team had no business going 8-7-1. It's interesting that he doesn't get more heat nationally despite the fact that he's never made the playoffs consecutively. Two of his last three years have been wildly disappointing. He needs to right the ship fast.

    15) Frank Reich
Honestly, I don't know how the fuck to grade this guy. The three best things about the Colts, clearly, are Andrew Luck, Chris Ballard and Matt Eberflus. I do think he deserves credit for putting Luck into a high percentage scheme that minimizes risk of re-injury to the shoulder. I think he walked into a pretty good situation, with a talented GM and low expectations, so let's see how they handle the frontrunner role in 2019.

    16) Matt Nagy
Sort of the same as above. Let's see what the future holds.

    17) Mike Vrabel
I love his attitude and his leadership qualities, but their 9-7 record is exactly where Mike Mularkey left off. Going for two in the London game was a questionable decision. I think he'll improve over time, and work himself into the Rivera/Quinn echelon of head coaches. The biggest question mark in Tennessee is Mariota.

    18) Doug Marrone
He's just kind of a miserable fuck. He did lead Jacksonville to the AFC Championship, and you can't completely discount that. Plus, this list gets awfully depressing awfully fast.

    19) Sean McDermott
    See?

    20) Jay Gruden
I have no idea how the fuck he's lasted this long. This is a case of "stability" actually being a very, very bad thing. Their one shining moment under Gruden - a 9-7, one-and-done division title - came with Sean McVay on staff. I almost feel bad for Redskin fans.

    21) Kyle Shanahan
He's currently 5-20 without Jimmy Garappolo as his starting quarterback. People rave about the job he does with backup quarterbacks. I'm not sure why. 5-20 is pretty fucking awful.

    22) Pat Shurmer
What exactly is it that you do here?

    23) Jon Gruden
    lol

    24) Matt Patricia
You have to be pretty shitty to make 64 year old Jim Caldwell a hot coaching candidate.

Your list is good, however, most of your top 10 guys are "specialists." That is, offensive or defensive specialists. I don't particularly care for HC's that spend their time on one side of the ball. That goes for our guy too. Bleichik, Carrol, Harbaugh.

Harbaugh got the blowback from the 2000 Ravens: the team was determined to not let the average qb get away this time and overpaid Flacco that meant fewer vets to cover iffy drafts (new England and Baltimore are the kings of finding well priced vets and giving them jobs that maximize their good qualities). So in a way I blame ozzy great as he is for some of that.

I would hope that carolina would find smart highly motivated ex-players (with pashun!) as position coaches . .. then once it's time to dispatch OC or DC (and eventually HC) you can promote from within.
Admittedly I do not know shit about current panthers position coaches. Are there any who show enough promise to promote down the line?

Blackburn has been around some great ones. I could see him being a HC someday.

There is no way that Garrett is in the playoffs without his DC.
